Mr. Salter – Principal
- Good luck to all of our teams competing in the Regional tournaments!
- Thank you to the Galena 5 Star PTO for recognizing our teachers this week for Teacher Appreciation. The whole week has been filled with new and exciting events and treats for our teachers. We really appreciate it.
- As we continue to improve our school security during academic hours, we’ve added two new door sensors to the front of the school which sound an alarm when the doors are opened. We are addressing an issue of students are opening, or propping the doors open, for friends who are late.
Mrs. Nelson – Assistant Principal

I wanted to share this opportunity in the hope that you might be willing to help by donating or sharing the link and/or flyer (attached) within your networks. Our goal is to generate additional support so we can continue providing essential resources that enable our department to do this important work. All activities/clubs and athletics teams will be present, and we will be providing fundraising information and seeking community input on upcoming activity and athletic venue projects for Galena. - As the semester progresses, please look at Infinite Campus and work with your students to ensure that they are turning in their work!
- ACT : Up next is the ACT on February 24th, which will be administered to all WCSD juniors and is a graduation requirement. We encourage students to take this test seriously—strong scores can open doors to scholarships and college opportunities, especially at UNR. Many students later wish they had tried harder when they realize how much their ACT score impacts scholarship eligibility. For details about how UNR links ACT scores and GPA to scholarship awards, please visit their website. Remember, even students with a GPA below 3.25 can still earn the Millennium Scholarship (worth $10,000 toward a Nevada college) by scoring a 21 or higher on the ACT.
- Two Opportunities to Prepare for the ACT are:
1. Edgenuity - Log into WCSD’s online Edgnuity program and add the ACT test prep. This is free. 1. Log into Edgenuity, 2. Click the plus sign next to your name at the top, 3. Starting tomorrow, 11/20, we’re taking a new step to support positive attendance and a safe learning environment for all students.
To help keep classrooms focused and students accounted for, any student found roaming the halls without a valid pass from a classroom teacher will be assigned to In‑School Suspension (ISS) for the remainder of that day. This is intended to encourage students to get to class on time and remain there so learning can happen without disruption.
Students with an off period are welcome to use the library, go to their vehicle, or leave campus—however, they should not walk the halls or enter other teachers’ classrooms, as that interrupts instruction.
Thank you for supporting our efforts to foster a safe, respectful learning environment for every student.

Galena Community Update November 13, 2025
Mr. Salter – Principal
- Please remind students to leave for school early if their path to school includes the construction zone on Wedge Parkway.
- Construction on the perimeter fence and the single point of entry in the main foyer is still underway and is expected to be completed during Winter Break.
- Please remember, if you visit the school to check in at the Front Office.
- This past weekend our Cross Country and Girls Soccer programs represented Galena at the State Championships, and we’re proud to share some incredible results.
- Our Boys Cross Country team brought home the State Championship, finishing on top after a season of dedication and grit. Gioia Coudriet dominated the course, taking first place in the girls race as only a sophomore. And our Girls Soccer team battled all the way to the title game, earning State Runner-Up after an outstanding playoff run.
- These athletes worked extremely hard all season, and their commitment showed on the biggest stage.
Mrs. Nelson – Assistant Principal
ASVAB
- Last week, 43 students completed the ASVAB—a great first step in exploring future careers! The ASVAB helps students identify their areas of strength and how those align with different career paths. While results are not shared with the military, every student receives a free session to interpret their scores and explore next steps. This can be a powerful way to connect success in school with life after graduation. Our next ASVAB opportunity will be offered in April 2026. For those who took the ASVAB this week, we will be interpreting results on December 4th at 1:45 in the cafeteria.

If your student attempts to have the form signed and they are denied, they will be referred to our school's truancy officer for support in lowering their chronic absenteeism so that they can qualify for the license. Please remember to request that form prior to making your appointment with the DMV. Thank you!

Ms. Royce – Dean of Students
Dear Families,
- Thank you for your continued partnership in supporting strong attendance and a focused learning environment at Galena High School. We deeply appreciate all you do to help your student be successful.
- To maintain a safe and productive campus, we want to remind families of a few expectations. Students who are found wandering the hallways, sitting in vehicles during class time, or out of class without a pass from their teacher may be assigned to In-School Suspension (ISS). Additionally, students arriving more than 20 minutes after the bell will be redirected to ISS to minimize disruptions and preserve meaningful instructional time for all.
- As we approach the end of the second quarter, teachers will be reaching out to families of students who are currently failing a class. They will share the interventions and supports in place to help your student improve their academic standing. Your partnership in these efforts is invaluable.
- Thank you again for working with us to ensure a safe, structured, and supportive learning environment for every student. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or if we can support your student in any way.

Important Health Announcement
Good evening, this is Principal Jay Salter from Galena High School with an important health-related message for our Galena High School families:
We want to inform you that Northern Nevada Public Health (NNPH) has identified a confirmed case of pertussis (whooping cough) at Galena High School. Pertussis is a contagious respiratory infection that spreads through coughing and sneezing and can cause a prolonged cough lasting several weeks.
Please take a moment to carefully review the attached letters from Northern Nevada Public Health, which provide detailed information for both parents/guardians and healthcare providers.
- The first letter is informing parents they may have been exposed to a case at our school.
- The second letter is to provide to your doctor if your child develops symptoms or if you know they have been exposed.
These letters include important recommendations regarding:
- Monitoring for symptoms of pertussis through Friday, February 20, 2026
- When to keep a student home from school or activities
- When to seek medical evaluation and possible antibiotic treatment
- Guidance on vaccination and prevention
If your student develops a persistent cough or other symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider and inform them of the possible exposure to pertussis. NNPH recommends that all family members ensure their Tdap vaccinations are current to reduce the risk of spreading the illness to infants or others who may be more vulnerable.
We appreciate your partnership in keeping our students and staff healthy and safe. If you have questions after reviewing the attached NNPH letters, please contact Northern Nevada Public Health at 775-328-2447 or consult your child’s healthcare provider.
Thank you

Mrs. Courneya – Assistant Principal
- As of March 16th, 2026, Chronic Absenteeism at Galena high School is at 27.84%. This is up 5.15% since this time last year. Chronic Absenteeism is defined as missing 10% or more of school for any reason. Being chronically absent has a significant impact on a student’s ability to read at grade level, perform academically, and graduate on time. It is a proven predictor of academic failure and dropout rates.
- Please encourage your students to be on time and attend all of their classes for the final quarter of this school year. Let’s show up and end the year with a strong 4th quarter.
Ms. Sullivan – Bookkeeper
- If you have not yet paid you class fees, you can log on to Infinite Campus and under the fees tab see what fees are outstanding. If a class was dropped, please email me at wlsullivan@washoeschools.net and I can correct the error in IC.

Mr. Tanner – Dean of Students
- Beginning 4/6/26 our traffic gate behind Galena HS will remain closed from 8:30AM-2:00PM. Please direct your calls to the main office should you need the gate unlocked for any reason outside of these hours.
- Mrs. Royce – Dean of Students
Dear Families,
- To support both student safety and uninterrupted learning, our school has implemented secured doors at the front entrance, creating a single point of entry during instructional hours. These doors lock approximately 30 minutes after each class period begins. This process helps ensure that all students are safely accounted for while protecting valuable instructional time for every classroom. Even small disruptions at the beginning of class can make it more difficult for students and teachers to maintain focus, so these procedures help us create the consistent learning environment our students deserve.
- If a student arrives after the doors are secured, they will need to check in through the front office before being admitted to campus and receiving a pass to class. Our goal is to help students transition into learning as smoothly as possible while minimizing interruptions to instruction already in progress.
- If you know your student will be arriving late, we encourage you to notify the front office through Infinite Campus so our staff can assist with a smooth check-in and timely return to class.
- For students who experience ongoing tardiness, the school may implement additional MTSS supports, such as goal-setting meetings and progress monitoring, to help students build strong attendance habits and remain engaged in their learning. When students arrive significantly late, staff may use that time to check in with the student and provide structured support before they transition back into class.
- Thank you for partnering with us as we work together to support the safety, responsibility, and academic success of all students.
Mr. Banghart – Athletic Director
- As we head into the spring athletic season, I want to take a moment to remind everyone of the important role spectators play in creating a positive experience for our student-athletes.
- Galena athletics is built on respect, sportsmanship, and pride in our school community. We ask that all spectators model these values by supporting our athletes and coaches in a positive manner. Please remember that high school sports are an extension of the classroom and are meant to provide a meaningful learning experience for our students.
- Galena High School is currently seeking applicants for the position of Head Volleyball Coach for the upcoming season.
- We are looking for a dedicated and passionate coach who is committed to developing student-athletes both on and off the court. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, a commitment to sportsmanship, and the ability to build a positive and competitive program that represents Galena with pride.

Mrs. Royce – Dean of Students
Dear Galena Families,
As we continue through the spring months, we want to thank you for your support in helping our campus run safely and efficiently during arrival each day.
This time of year brings an increase in student drivers, as many of our sophomores begin driving while our senior drivers remain on campus. As a result, our parking areas are at full capacity, and morning traffic can be more challenging.
- We kindly ask for your partnership with the following:
- Students should not park in the staff parking lot, as it is secured after 8:00 a.m.
- Please avoid parking in designated student drop-off areas, as this can slow the flow of traffic and impact timely arrival for all students.
- We understand that parking limitations can be inconvenient, and we truly appreciate your patience and cooperation. Planning ahead and allowing extra time in the morning can help ensure a smooth and timely start to the school day.
- Thank you for your continued support of our school community.
Mrs. Taylor – Counselor
- Registration for Summer & Fall 2026 TMCC Jumpstart courses are now open. Please have your student come see their counselor with any questions.
